Ethylene oxide – Wikipedia
Ethylene oxide is a colorless gas at 25 °C (77 °F) and is a mobile liquid at 0 °C (32 °F) – the viscosity of liquid ethylene oxide at 0 °C is about 5.5 times lower than that of water.
The gas has a characteristic sweet odor of ether, noticeable when its concentration in the air exceeds 500 ppm.
C2H4O is readily soluble in water, ethanol, diethyl ether, and many organic solvents.
Ethylene Oxide Uses
Ethylene Oxide (EtO) is used for low-temperature sterilization of heat-sensitive medical devices, plastics, and composites. It penetrates packaging and complex device structures, ensuring sterility and reducing microbial load in medical, pharmaceutical, and food products.
EtO is also a key chemical intermediate for producing ethylene glycol, antifreeze, PET plastics, textiles, detergents, adhesives, and other industrial products.
Common applications include:
– Sterilizing medical devices, implants, catheters, and surgical tools
– Fumigating spices, seasonings, and sensitive agricultural products
– Manufacturing adhesives, textiles, plastics, and household cleaners
– Producing ethylene glycol for industrial and consumer chemicals
Applications
- Medical Sterilization: Low-temperature sterilization for heat-sensitive devices, implants, and surgical instruments.
- Pharmaceutical & Packaging: Penetrates packaging to sterilize lab supplies and packaged products.
- Chemical Production: Key feedstock for ethylene glycol, antifreeze, PET plastics, and polyester fibers.
- Consumer & Industrial Products: Used in detergents, adhesives, textiles, plastics, and surfactants.
- Food & Agriculture: Reduces microbial contamination in spices, seasonings, and crops.
